Ann Menezies: Artist
HEADSTRONG EXHIBITION
HEADSTRONG
showcases the latest collection of bold new works by Sydney artist and former
high school teacher ANN MENEZIES.
The delicately painted portraits of the artists’ family and friends are transformed by intricate golden patterns over the contours of the faces, evocative of statues of ancient religious traditions.
MENEZIES who studies Fine Art in Birmingham, England was formerly inspired by Bible symbology from her Pentecostal and Jehovah’s Witness past.
Still interested in images that inspire divinity, the HEADSTRONG series, by weaving intricate tactile strokes over the portraits, MENEZIES simultaneously reduces them to glittering trinkets and elevates them to the status of precious revered icons.
The cultural background of MENEZIES’ Sydney friends is as varied as the corners on the world from which the artist take visual references to gold, statues, iconography, portraiture and pattern.
HEADSTRONG is the contemporary iconography in a society where values of friendship, peace, and connection with the divine, attempts to merge with the desire for wealth, power, and glittering good times.
